Pure veg and veg-friendly cafes: Umber Coffee is listed as pure vegetarian. Most other cafes here have strong veg sections, but serve meat too. For an all-veg filter coffee and tiffin stop, Chennai's darshinis and tiffin rooms are the classic choice.

Getting there, best time and parking

Chennai Metro serves several of these areas: Anna Nagar has Anna Nagar East and Anna Nagar Tower stations, and Egmore has both a metro stop and the main railway station. Nungambakkam cafes are a short cab ride from either. For the ECR, you need a cab or your own vehicle.

Chennai is hot and humid most of the year, so mornings and evenings are best, and the ECR is most pleasant from November to February. Weekend evenings at Soroco, Sandy's and Kipling are busy; call ahead for a group.
