The best cafes in Kolkata fall into three clusters. Park Street and the streets around it hold the old tearooms and a few calm coffee bars. Salt Lake Sector 1, around City Centre, has the densest run of newer cafes. South Kolkata, from Bhowanipore to Hindustan Park and Southern Avenue, is where heritage houses have turned into cafes.
This guide lists 14 cafes, 13 in those three areas plus one College Street classic, each with the facts we could source: address or landmark, reported cost for two and timings where a listing gave them. Costs and hours change, so check the listing or call before you go.

Cafes in South Kolkata

Aesthetic, rooftop and affordable cafes in Kolkata
Aesthetic cafes: the heritage picks are the prettiest: The Bhawanipur House, The Glenburn Cafe and Cafe Muller. Sienna and Mrs Magpie suit people who want a styled, cute interior.
Rooftop and terrace: true rooftop cafes in Kolkata are mostly bars. For a cafe with outdoor seating, Blue Tokai on Chowringhee Road lists an open terrace, and Cafe Muller has a terrace over Park Mansions.
Affordable cafes: Indian Coffee House is the cheapest by far. 8th Day in Salt Lake and Byloom Canteen are good budget picks for coffee and a snack.
Pure veg: Dunkel Braun is listed as pure vegetarian. The Spot Cafe won a vegetarian cafe award, though its listing is inconsistent.
Getting there, timing and booking
Park Street has its own metro station on the Blue Line, which makes Flurys, Blue Tokai and Cafe Muller easy to reach. For Salt Lake, a cab or auto to City Centre 1 is simplest, and most cafes in Sector 1 are within a short walk of it. Hindustan Park and Southern Avenue are close to Gariahat and Rabindra Sarobar.
Weekday mornings are calmest. Park Street and Salt Lake cafes fill up on weekend evenings and around Christmas, when Park Street is at its busiest. Street parking is tight in Park Street and Hindustan Park; Salt Lake is easier. Most of these cafes take walk-ins, but call ahead for a group.
How we picked these cafes
We read recent food guides and dining app listings, opened every page we cite, and kept only cafes with a current listing or a 2023 to 2026 mention. Where sources disagree on cost or veg status we say so. No cafe paid to be included, and we do not take bookings or orders.
